The cruise control on my Jeep messed up today on the freeway. All of a sudden, when crossing over the crest of a large hill, it “floored” the gas and I started accelerating REALLY fast. Next thing I know I’m at 85, 90 and climbing… It was pretty cool, until I realized the controls on the steering wheel didn’t work anymore. Eek! Luckily the brake deactivation switch disabled the cruise control as it is supposed to. I was ready to bail too, I swear. I’m tough.

Yeah, a car in control of it’s own throttle is scary. I had this happen once with my first car. It was a 1986 Chevrolet Chevette. Sometimes the pedal would get stuck on the expressway and the only way to free it was to pound on it. Turns out the ball-chain on the carburetor was getting caught on something.
Your best bet is to pull the EPROMS from your jeep’s ECM and copy them to a floppy disc. Keep this disc in your glove box. Should your car go out of control again you can open the door and scrape the disc on the road. This should slow the car down to a speed that would permit a safe bail.
Uh, it’s the 21st century. I’m going to use a CD or DVDR, m’kay?
